Open Source Translator App

I have started putting together my thoughts and ideas for the final:

  • Set a clear goal
    • Create an open source platform to improve word translation from English to another language (in this case, Filipino) to improve the accuracy of the translation.
    • This platform will use Speech Recognition and will benefit both fluent speakers and immigrant Filipinos who wants to learn the language.
    • Design constraints:  Speech Recognition and Google translate API
  • User research
    • Persona
    • Eli, 29 yo, Male, professor
        • EIi is looking for a language translator platform to teach kids Filipino part-time on weekends
        • Eli is a culture buff and is fascinated about learning about his roots. He is disappointed that Google Translate is not accurate in its language translations.
        • Eli likes to play with apps like codeacademy on downtime. HE recommends that educational apps do work when in a game format.

    • Maria, 16 yo, Female, immigrant coming home for the first time
      • Maria wants to travel to Manila and study there for a year
      • Maria didn’t grow up learning FIlipino but it would really help her if she had something she can access from her mobile phone

  • Device Limitations
    • Connectivity
  • Approach/Limitations
    • Interaction and the schematics of connection of the VUI
  • Find your Voice
      • Dialog Flow Design (Chatbot example)
      • Play test (Wizard of Oz)
      • Personality-Inspired

I came across Open Speech Recording where the public can improve on the translated language using Google Translate API. The idea of crowd-sourcing to naieve speakers to increase fidelity and accurateness to translated words is brilliant.

Upon building this GUI for the translator app, I was thinking how busy the whole thing looks and still am contemplating on simplifying which part can be assigned to a VUI feature instead.
