In his book The Transparent Society: Will Technology Force Us To Choose Between Privacy And Freedom? David Brin writes that “Surveillance is intrinsic in the way brands do business, and the only way to respond is make the surveillance 2-way through transparency.”
Data Footprint and Privacy
Data Privacy has been at the back of my mind since we started the class. Brin was right. After plotting the user journey for this project, I realized I’m wired 24/7 to these various sites/apps, which I know are vital to accomplishing certain tasks. This project definitely opened my eyes to a complex digital landscape that makes data privacy secondary to the “free” time-saving efficient services we subscribe to as we go about our day. If not actively sought out by consumers, transparency in data should be held accountable from data purchasers and service providers. Having a platform that empowers user be more data-aware is a good start.
Why the Data Clinic Metaphor?
Using the “data cleanse” metaphor is my first attempt in prototyping a service design blueprint for this topic. I really wanted something less complicated and closer to the likes of transparency in blockchain technology or API keys but it was hard to make this concept relatable.
