Goals:

• Introverted – doesn’t feel comfortable interacting in person
• Afraid to express himself in public, Always worry about what people say about him
• Wants to increase his access to have friends outside work, welcome a network of fellow designers

Motivation:

• Need a product that can help him be confident with starting connections with people
• To find friends and spend time outside the digital space

Needs:

• A social skills assistant that sends push notifications to Alex when a potential friend in the area with 3 similar interests pops up
• This bot will analyze personalities/interest of each user
• Facial Recognition or signal that says they are open to social interaction

Challenges:

• Machine Learning technology – to what extent are we using this tech? Setting parameters
• Bringing out the worse in people example: MS Twitter learned to become racist
• Privacy and safety of users

Validation

We interviewed 2 potential users and discovered a few more insights:

1. Understanding the problem deeper: ANITA
   • Motivation: Anita mentions that the source of her anxiety in social situations is that she is very self-conscious about how she appears to her peers.
   • Goals: She cares about changing her view of herself and this will absolutely change the way she carries herself in moments that she would have to interact with peers
   • Needs:
     • She would like to get a good pep talk that reminds her how awesome she is. This will help inject positivity in her day.
     • She likes the feature of the app that helps her become aware of her friends being around and the it is enough for her that she is able to be connected with this friend in person.
2. Think about the peers’ reaction not just the key user: JAMES
   • Needs:
     • I’d like to be helped to initiate small talk
   • Motivation: 
     • I’d like to have more friends
     • What if people want their personal space? Will this device be too imposing?
