Jun Miyake’s Lilies of the Valley (2:15 – 2:30)
I have learned about Jun Miyake’s Lilies of the Valley while watching Jeremy Abbott skate accompanied by this music at the Sochi Olympics in 2014. It was such an intriguing piece, possibly because his performance was so heartfelt.
Lilies of the Valley is also by a Japanese composer so I thought the output is a good hybrid of western and eastern influences. While listening to it, you could clearly hear the dynamic combination of instruments can be compared to telling a suspenseful story. I specifically picked this part of the piece because you can hear how it slowly progresses from one instrument to another:
- piano
- piano + some sort of percussion
- piano + percussion + guitar/string
