Patterns: A Challenge A Day (Soon.)

Designing Interfaces O'Reilly books in 4 versions. with sticky notes saying " 2005, 2009, another 2009 and 2010. It's a funny photo with consistent duck illustration covers.

Design Patterns have been around since books were made with bird and insect covers (My favorite is Designing Interfaces by Jennifer Tidwell.)

Join me in my design patterns journey as I filter through the noise, break down commonly used patterns through readings and explorations.

Patterns are not as well documented in the internet as the atomic components are. I plan to pick the brain of authors plot my next steps and share literature gems via this reading list.

My Talking Points at the Health Tech Panel hosted by Supernova

06/18/2024

Over the past decade, Design Systems have moved from a niche concept to an essential strategy for scaling digital products, thanks to the organic advocacy of design and development teams. This shift has been particularly transformative for complex industries like Healthcare, where a well-structured platform strategy accelerates digital transformation.

At Evernorth, I contribute to our Design Systems team, focusing on the often-overlooked yet critical work of defining pattern-level components. While foundational styles and base components are well-documented in atomic design, establishing scalable, reusable patterns requires deeper exploration and a strategic approach.

Key discussions in our work revolve around platform architecture and the concept of “design-as-a-service,” ensuring accessibility is not an afterthought but an integrated swimlane in our workflow. We’re also refining our Token Architecture to support a multi-brand, framework-agnostic enterprise strategy.

Over the past two years, our Enterprise Design System has evolved into a centralized hub, aligning design decisions through Figma and shared code libraries. This alignment has been instrumental in streamlining collaboration across teams, accelerating brand rollouts, and driving faster product development in a highly dynamic market.

Accessibility Annotation in Design Systems

07/05/2024

I’ve presented a workshop on Accessible Design Annotations within the Cigna/Evernorth org. In the initial iteration, we honed in on four design principles – Semantic Heading, Buttons and Links, Non-text alternative Icons and Form Label/Autocomplete. Designers were able to test the toolkit with their examples by the end of the workshop.

Open Sprints Project: A Design and Dev Mentorship for Equity

03/09/2024

Our team at Femmecubator.org started setting up an open source component library named Equity UI. This library aims to support social good companies and connect aspiring devs and designers to learn how to build Design Systems. Last March, our mentors paired up with Developer Fellows from Flatiron School in NYC for this project.
